Don't expect much help for Mitchell Blvd. Park.

County says 'no' to burn.

Graffiti goof returns
"I'm back, I'm back," he taunts

June 12, 2006 -- The restrooms in Mitchell Blvd. Park were temporarily closed last week after they were vandalized with graffiti, apparently by the same person who vandalized them three times last year, according to County Supervisor Lynne DeBruin.

The vandal even wrote "I'm back, I'm back," DeBruin said.

"He's very proud of himself, that he's back," she said.

The Sheriff's Department, which is increasing park patrols, has vowed to step up efforts to catch the vandal, DeBruin said.

"He's now habitual," DeBruin said.

Anyone with information about the vandal or the vandalism is asked to contact the Sheriff's Department at 278-4788.

Don't expect much county help for Mitchell Blvd. Park

May 15, 2006 -- Less mowing and fewer garbage cans are the unhappy outlook for county parks this year, and small parks like Mitchell Blvd. Park bearing the brunt of the budget-cutting burden, according to County Supervisor Lynne DeBruin.

"Parks that do not have revenue-generating activities occurring in them are the lowest priority -- abolute lowest," she said.

The Parks Department is broke. It is coming off an estimated $1.3 million 2005 deficit and was forced to make cuts again this year to avoid a 2006 deficit.

Parks Director Sue Black is entering the summer season with 50 to 70 fewer seasonal worker positions than she had last year, DeBruin said.

"She has a whole list of the type of services she will be reducing," DeBruin said.

The good news: the county's pools will all open, as will baseball and soccer fields.

There will, however, be less mowing and fewer garbage cans in park interiors -- the cans will be concentrated more on the edges of parks, DeBruin said.

For those trying to enjoy the unmowed vistas, DeBruin said, there will be "an expectation that they're going to carry their trash further then they used to do."

Bad lawn-mowing at Mitchell Blvd. Park left behind huge clumps of grass, which madethe park generally unuseable for active recreation purposes. Sorry, kids.

County says 'no' to burn at Mitchell Blvd. Park

March 30, 2006 -- County risk managers have quashed plans for burning the invasive-infested natural areas in Mitchell Blvd. Park.

"I just wanted to let you know that we finally received a reply from the County's risk management," Parks Department Natural Areas Manager Paul Kortebein wrote to Gerard Froh, head of the Story Hill Neighborhood Association Parks Committee. " The answer is no to performing a burn at Mitchell Blvd. Park. We will, therefore be flail mowing the site in the near future. Thanks for your support all the same."

The burn was originally was supposed to occur last fall, but snow fell before it could get done.

Flail mowing will not destroy the invasives, which will likely continue to spread.

Growing in the Mitchell Park natural area...

A short walk through a small part of the west side natural area of Mitchell Blvd Park produced a big bag of garbage.
