Extreme sports
at Miller Park?
City has zoning say, Murphy says
March
31 -- Neighborhood residents will be consulted if
plans for an extreme sports complex at Miller Park move forward, according
to Ald. Michael Murphy.
The
MIlwaukee Journal Sentinel reported last week that Martin Greenberg,
whom Gov. Doyle has appointed to the Stadium District Board, has pitched
a potential development for Miller Park grounds that sources say include
an an active or extreme sports complex with a ski hill, restaurants
and perhaps condos or a hotel.
Miller
Park District Executive Director Mike Duckett did not return a phone
call seeking more information about the proposal.
Murphy
said he had not been contacted about Greenberg's proposal, and said
it was "very speculative."
The
city has zoning authority over stadium property, he said.
"The
city will take an active interest in making sure residents' voices are
heard on what they propose," Murphy said.
Miller
Park is just south of the Story Hill neighborhood.
Current
zoning of Miller Park property would allow some of the proposed development
west of 44th St., according to Map Milwaukee and the city zoning code.
That area is a Downtown zoning district, which allows hotels and sports
facilities, but requires a special use permit for outdoor recreational
facilities.
The
area east of 44th Street is zoned for industrial use.
