McGee
proposal for Miller Park cruising seems a non-starter
June
27, 2006 -- Ald. Michael McGee's proposal to
allow supervised cruising on Miller Park parking lots
crashed into a wall of opposition as soon as it was floated
Tuesday.
"It's
not going to happen," Ald. Michael Murphy said. Miller
Park lots are south and east of Story Hill.
McGee
suggested Tuesday that the city and Milwaukee Brewers
allow cruising "in and around" the Miller Park
parking lots.
"My
plan would give law-abiding youth an opportunity to socialize
in the Miller Park lots under adult and police supervision,"
McGee said in a prepared statement.
Murphy
said McGee was planning to use the park's eastern lots,
which are in Ald. Robert Donovan's district. Donovan
is opposed, and so are the Brewers, Murphy said.
He
said he did not like the idea, either. "It has no
support," Murphy said. "The individuals who
are doing the cruising have no respect for the law. Who
would want to invite them into their community? I sure
don't."
McGee
said his proposal is "well thought out and provides
a temporary forum for youth to positively express themselves
and to exhibit proper behavior when socializing late at
night."
Said
Murphy: "The people who participate in cruising --
I don't think they give a damn what Ald. McGee thinks."
