Jacobus,
other lagoons, to get clean-up effort
Nov.
27, 2006 -- The lagoons at Jacobus Park and three
other county parks are being targeted by the county for
rehab efforts next year, according to County Supervisor
Lynne DeBruin.
The
2007 county budget includes funding for innovative efforts
to rescue the troubled lagoons at Jacobus, just northwest
of Story Hill; Dineen Park, on W. Vienna Ave.; and Humboldt
Park, on S. Howell Ave.
A
2005 lagoon management plan "confirmed most people’s
suspicions that most of
our ponds and lagoons were in an advanced state of disrepair,"
according to county budget documents.

The Jacobus Park Lagoon
The
report found that the lagoon in Jacobus Park is plagued
by high turbidity, or stirred-up sediments or foreign particles;
rough fish, which are fish that stir up bottom sediment
and increase turbidity and reintroducing nutrients; and
nuisance plants.
The
demonstration projects at the lagoons will include using
coir logs, which are biodegradable and made of coconut fiber,
to provide bank stabilization to allow plant growth, according
to the budget documents.
"Since
the methods to be demonstrated are innovative, additional
design work will be needed to optimize the success of the
methods used," according to the budget documents. "It
is expected that these demonstration projects will provide
the insight and enthusiasm needed to begin a long term,
moderately funded program to put all County ponds and lagoons
back in good condition with reduced maintenance needs."
