Barrett to link sewer user fees to runoff amounts

July 25, 2005 -- Mayor Barrett will propose that companies that are sources of large amounts of stormwater runoff be charged more in sewer user fees in 2006.

The proposed change will shift about $2 million to $3 million in sewer fee costs from residential to commercial properties. The city fee generates about $30 million in revenue.

A representative of the city’s budget office disclosed the proposal during last week’s meeting of the Common Council’s Public Improvements Committee.

While businesses will pay more in the short run, they will be able to reduce future charges by adopting measures that increase the amount of their properties that can absorb water.
