It's so exciting!

Oct. 3, 2004 -- The entire power structure of Milwaukee and the neighborhood -- the mayor, the alderman, the Story Hill Neighborhood Association and, of course, a tavern representative -- turned out for the ribbon-cutting for the newly-reconstructed Bluemound Rd. last week.

Bluemound reconstruction scheduled for '04

June 13, 2002 -- The reconstruction of Bluemound Rd. from Story Pkwy. to N. 66th St. will be in 2004, rather than in 2007 as originally scheduled, according to local officials.

Ald. Michael Murphy said he requested the state's Bluemound project be done earlier because he did not want the street to be torn up at the same time I-94 is under construction. That was a possibility under the original timeline, he said.

"The condition of the roadway is poor," he said, adding, "Aesthetically, it's not the greatest."

Murphy said he hopes the appearance of the street can be improved, and that he has contacted business owners along Bluemound to encourage them to take advantage of the city's facade grant program to spruce up their storefronts.

SHNA President Sandy Rusch Walton said neighborhood residents interested in participating in a Bluemound Rd. committee should contact Steve Brachman, head of the SHNA Civic Committee. The Bluemound Rd. committee will work to ensure that road planners take neighborhood concerns and interests into account when they redesign Bluemound.

Murphy said he would like to get people living on either side of Bluemound, from Story Hill to Wells St., involved in the project.

Meanwhile, on another road issue, Murphy said the work underway on Hawley Rd. north of Wells St. is to get the street through another year and is not the start of the anticipated major street / bridge reconstruction project.

The road will be examined again next year, he said.
